Abstract
The main focus of this project is on studying next generation of Content Delivery Network (CDN) regarding cloud and mobile computing. With rapid progress in ICT technologies, services as well as content/information users can obtain over the Internet are continuously increasing. There are two noticeable trends in recent development of the Internet: cloud computing and the proliferation of mobile devices (mobile computing). Content/information are gradually concentrated in large data centers around the world, and today mobile devices consume and probably generate significant amount of contents because of great advances in development of hardware, wireless and mobile communications. Traditional Content Delivery Network (CDN) works well on current Internet (with mostly wired environment and client-server architecture), but the question is if it will work on the Internet full of cloud computing and mobile computing. In the Internet with cloud and mobile computing, a user accesses required computing power and storage via ubiquitous connection, while CDN delivers computing results and content back to the user. Therefore a user can access services through networks without limitation of places, mobility and devices' capability. Regarding service providers, not only provision of computing power and storage but also how to deliver content/information with scalable, secure and efficient is a key to their growing and success.
In this project we will approach the problem from following three aspects; 1) the design of CDN coordinating cloud and edge computing functionality, 2) content distribution under trust relationship constraint, and 3) the design and investigation of mobile content delivery network. These topics are both important and challenging. The first one is, in our preliminary survey, one of the most popular topics in computer networking area. Rather than investigating a way to merge these two heterogeneous resources, cloud and edge computing, for enabling high efficient content delivery network, current research works focus on adjustment for the efficiency and utilization of cloud computing. The second one is an important and inevitable issue to CDN interconnection (or inter-CDN) environments. There are only few, if not none, literatures studying the last one topic. With explosively increased mobile user population, it will stand out from other issues in the near future. Our previous research focused on peer-assisted information dissemination problem and file dissemination under trust constraint, the results are therefore relevant to aforementioned issues. Based on our knowledge and experience to information dissemination and efficiency analysis/evaluation, we expect the outcome of this project will benefit the understanding and design of next generation content delivery network, in both academic and practical aspects.
